For over two decades, Melinda Gates stood beside one of the most powerful men in the world—philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. But after 27 years of marriage, she made a decision that shook the public and private worlds alike: she walked away. In a rare and emotional interview, Melinda opened up about the personal storm that led her to file for divorce, and why the $65 billion settlement didn’t matter nearly as much as the emotional cost.

“I don’t like the narrative that people put out there,” she said. “That I did it for the money. That couldn’t be further from the truth.”

According to Melinda, the decision to leave Bill Gates came after years of inner conflict and doubts about trust. “It took me 27 years to realize that I couldn’t trust him. I felt like he was cheating on me. That thought ate away at me for a long time. And I finally realized I had to leave—even before I filed for divorce.”
