For over two decades, Melinda Gates stood beside one of the most powerful men in the world—philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. But after 27 years of marriage, she made a decision that shook the public and private worlds alike: she walked away. What many assumed was a simple billionaire divorce, Melinda now reveals, was anything but.
In a rare and emotional interview, Melinda opened up about the personal storm that led her to file for divorce, and why the $65 billion settlement didn’t matter nearly as much as the emotional cost.
“I don’t like the narrative that people put out there,” she said. “That I did it for the money. That couldn’t be further from the truth.”
According to Melinda, the decision to leave Bill Gates came after years of inner conflict and doubts about trust. “It took me 27 years to realize that I couldn’t trust him. I felt like he was cheating on me. That thought ate away at me for a long time. And I finally realized I had to leave—even before I filed for divorce.”
She described the pain of realizing that the future she envisioned with Bill was no longer possible. “It’s devastating when the person you built your life with becomes a stranger to your heart,” she admitted.
Rumors have long surrounded Bill Gates’ personal life, including his long-term relationship with his ex-girlfriend Ann Winblad, which he reportedly maintained even after his marriage. While Melinda declined to address specifics, her words hinted at deeper betrayals.
“I cried for weeks after the divorce,” she said. “The money didn’t comfort me. I wasn’t thinking about the billions. I was thinking about the years I gave, the sacrifices I made, and the pain I was carrying.”
The Gates’ divorce, finalized in 2021, shocked the world not only because of the couple’s enormous wealth and philanthropy, but because they had long been seen as a united force. Together, they built the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the most powerful charitable organizations in the world. But Melinda now reveals that behind the scenes, things were not as perfect as they seemed.
“Publicly, we were this powerhouse team,” she said. “But in private, I was hurting. And no one really saw that. I smiled in pictures, I gave speeches, I signed deals—but at home, I was falling apart.”
Despite the heartbreak, Melinda says she doesn’t regret the marriage. “We did a lot of good together. And I don’t regret the life we built. But I needed to choose myself. For once, I needed to put my own peace ahead of everything else.”
Choosing herself came with a price—not just emotionally, but publicly. “People were quick to assume that I walked away richer and happier. The truth is, I walked away shattered. It’s just that I didn’t show it to the world.”
Even more painful than public judgment, Melinda says, was the feeling of betrayal. “Trust is everything in a relationship. And when it’s gone—whether because of cheating, secrecy, or lies—there’s nothing left to stand on.”
When asked if she believed Bill Gates was unfaithful, Melinda paused. “Let’s just say I had enough reason to doubt. And that doubt slowly turned into distance. And that distance became permanent.”
Though she remains focused on philanthropy and her personal growth, Melinda admits that rebuilding herself after divorce has been a slow and painful process. “Getting a divorce is a horrible thing. It’s painful. It’s awful when you realize you need one. You ask yourself: Am I failing? Am I giving up? But eventually, you realize that staying might be the greater failure.”

Now in her late 50s, Melinda says she’s learning to live again—with a new kind of strength.
“I’m proud of myself. It was the hardest decision of my life. But I made it. And I stand by it. I’m not defined by my ex-husband or by money. I’m defined by my choices, my values, and how I rise from heartbreak.”
Her message to other women? “Don’t stay silent. Don’t stay stuck. Even if the world thinks you’re crazy for walking away from wealth, comfort, or security—your peace is worth more.”
Melinda Gates may have walked away with billions. But what she really took with her was something far more valuable: her voice.
And now, she’s finally using it.
